WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR PARISH

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR: Despite the summer heat, it is not too soon to start thinking about the Christmas Bazaar, planned for Sunday, November 28, 2010. Parishioners are asked to remember the Bazaar Preserves Table when they are doing summer canning, and to keep a few jars aside. We would welcome jams, jellies, marmalade, salsa and chutney. Also, if parishioners have extra preserving jars (250 ml or 8 oz.) these would be put to good use. Please leave empty jars at the back of the church. Sign-up sheets for helping with the Bazaar will be available in September.

For more information please call Louise Rickenbacker at 613-231-2035 or Elsa Leleu at 613-236-8112.

SummerSUMMER MASS SCHEDULE: The Summer Mass Schedule for 2010 begins June 27th to September 5th inclusive. There will only be one Mass at 10:30 a.m. during this time. The Parish Office will be open on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the months of July and August. Normal hours will resume after Labour Day.

The school offers an integral Catholic education which centers on academic excellence and spiritual growth. We are now accepting applicants for September 2010. Please visit www.maryvaleacademy.ca and come to our Open House to learn more about some beautiful things at Maryvale Academy including our classically-based curriculum, our bilingual program, and our Blessed Sacrament chapel.

HOSPITALITY SUNDAY: There will be a hospitality Sunday on August 1st. After the 10:30 a.m. mass please join us for coffee and treats. If possible, please bring something tasty to share. We hope to see you there.

ANNUAL STRAWBERRY SOCIAL A GREAT SUCCESS: Our Parish Annual Strawberry Social was held after Mass on June 27th. The event was well attended and over $300 was raised. Everyone enjoyed the delicious strawberry shortcakes and a great time was had by all.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

WHY GO TO CHURCH? A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday… “I've gone for 30 years now,” he wrote, “and in that time I have heard something like 203,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all.”

This started a real controversy in the “Letters to the Editor” column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:

“I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But for the life of me I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this… They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!”  When you are DOWN to nothing… God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment.
