the Saviour of mankind;
to whom be glory for ever.

JANUARY 15TH - SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: 1 Samuel 3.3-10,19 Psalm: Psalm 40 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 6.13-15, 17-20
Gospel : John 1.35-42
THE COMING OF THE LIGHT
Christmas celebrates the dawn of the Light of the World. The powers of darkness are overcome by his coming to share our life. The long reign of sin is ended and grace has been poured out upon the earth. The Sun of Justice has arisen, and evil is vanquished."
Perhaps the hardest thing to remember about Christmas is this: It celebrates the incarnation, not just the nativity. The incarnation is an on-going process of salvation, while the nativity is the once-for-all-historical event of Bethlehem. We do not really celebrate Christ's 'birthday,' remembering something that happened long ago. We celebrate the stupendous fact of the incarnation, God entering our world so thoroughly that nothing has been the same since. And God continues to take flesh in our midst, in the men and women and children who form his body today. And the birth we celebrate is not just the past historical event but Christ's continuing birth in his members, accomplished by the power of the Spirit through the waters of baptism.
ARCHBISHOP PRENDERGAST'S 2011 CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Time magazine recently named "the protester" the Person of the Year 2011. This reflects the unsettled state of our world: uprisings in the Middle East, the Occupy Wall Street movement, and violence at every turn.
Our schools and social media promise personal growth. Sadly, they are also places where bullies find victims, with tragic results. Life in the womb is threatened by abortion. The end of life is menaced by demands for euthanasia.
People long for a message of hope, yearn for joy, and deeply desire peace. This is precisely what God offers in the mystery of Christmas. He sent His Son into our world to draw us into His own divine life.
The entire Bible tells of God's tender compassion for His people. It is the story of His reaching out to us. God did this most supremely by taking on our human condition, taking human form in the womb of the Virgin Mary.
He chose to live among us, to experience first hand poverty, hunger, thirst, temptation, betrayal, and even death of the most painful and degrading kind. He showed us that the way of love, pardon and devotion to others is God's way of doing things.
In his Spiritual Exercise, St. Ignatius Loyola invites believers to imagine the condition of the world - war, turmoil, disasters, and sins of every kind against justice and human dignity - that led God to intervene.
God decided that His Divine Word would enter the human condition to draw all of humanity back to Him and to eternal life. Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners, to save you, to save me.
So, please take time during these holy days to stop before the Christmas crib wherever you see one, be it in your home, at your parish, in front of or inside our Notre Dame cathedral.
There, pray silently before the Lord. Imagine Mary offering to let you take the Christ Child in your arms. Speak to your Lord and Saviour the deepest longings of your being. Listen to God tell you, as He surely told the shepherds and the magi, how to share the Good News with those who are struggling to believe, to find hope and to live in joy. We can live fully in God's kingdom and share His treasure.
Merry Christmas!
Terrence Prendergast, S.J.
Archbishop of Ottawa
ANGEL TREE - 2011

DECEMBER 25th
CHRISTMAS DAY
First Reading: Isaiah 62.11-12 Psalm 97 Second Reading: Romans 16.25-27 Gospel: Luke 2.15-20
PEACE
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith,
Where there is despair, hope,
Where there is darkness, light,
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console,
not so much to be understood as to understand,
not so much to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
it is in dying that we awake to eternal life.
--- St. Francis of Assisi
Advent is a time of prayer and hope. Please consider coming to Evening Prayer Liturgy at 7:00pm each Wednesday.

CLARIFICATION REGARDING THE LECTIONARY:
Archbishop Prendergast clarified the procedure for the entrance procession found in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal in his November letter to the Archdiocese. " The liturgy gives priority to the Gospel and so the description of the entrance procession stresses the Book of the Gospels over the lectionary (cf. GIRM #120d). Accordingly, the lectionary may no longer be brought in procession but should be placed on the ambo."

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
First Reading: 2 Samuel 7.1-5, 8-12, 14, 16 Psalm 89 Second Reading: Romans 16.25-27 Gospel : Luke 1.26-38
JOY
Pope Benedict XVI (12/18/05) commenting on the scene of the Annunciation: "With the angel's greeting to Mary —'kaire' in the Greek, which means 'be joyful'—the New Testament begins. We could say that the first word of the New Testament is 'be joyful,' 'be happy,' in other words, 'joy.' This is the true meaning of Christmas: God is near us, so near that He became a child. Joy is the true gift of Christmas, not the expensive gifts that call for time and money. We can communicate this joy simply: with a smile, a kind gesture, a little help, forgiveness. The joy we give will certainly come back to us.…Let us pray that this presence of the liberating joy of God shines forth in our lives."
Advent is a time of prayer and hope. Please consider coming to Evening Prayer Liturgy at 7:00pm each Wednesday. At this busy time of year, it is nice to pause and reflect on Christ's birth and our dreams for the New Year.

First Reading: Isaiah 61.1-2,10-11 Responsorial Psalm: Luke 1 Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5.16-24 Gospel : John 1:6-8,19-28
LOVE
In the Words of Mother Theresa: "We are blessed to have the beautiful sacrament of reconciliation. We go to confession a sinner full of sin. We come from confession a sinner without sin by the greatness of the mercy of God. No need for us to be discouraged as we have received the tenderness of God's love. We are precious to him. He loves us so tenderly that he has carved us on the palm of his hand. These are God's words written in the Scripture. Remember that when our hearts feel restless, we need to be assured that we are precious to Him. He loves us. He has called us by name. We are His. God loves us. To prove that love he died on the cross for our salvation."
Give thanks to the Lord, who is good, whose love endures forever. Psalm 118:1

HOPE
God has a great gift of grace for you! It's hope! The Act of Hope prayer below reminds us that with God there's no place for despair, no matter what life throws at us.
If, as Christ said, "with God all things are possible," (Matt.19:26), hope reminds us that with God's help all things are bearable! The Act of Hope prayer sums up the essentials of this grace in one tidy sentence.
O my God, relying on Your almighty power and infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of mysins, the help of Your grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer.
Advent is a time of prayer and hope. Please consider coming to Evening Prayer Liturgy at 7:00pm each Wednesday. At this busy time of year, it is nice to pause and reflect on Christ's birth and our dreams for the New Year.
